Have you started practicing to the Empress Orchestra music yet? No? What are you waiting for, its already beginning of May!
But, this year Blackpool Dance Festival is going to be a little different from 89 previous years. For the 90th year and first time ever, Professional American Style Smooth will be one of the categories danced at the Festival.
It all started with an idea to someday showcase American Smooth at Blackpool. Sandra Willson, along with the managing director Michael Williams, have been brewing that thought for quite some time. All until last year’s United States Dance Championships (USDC), where it was finally discussed and agreed on exhibting the Top 6 Professional American Smooth Finalists. It would be difficult to mention all persons involved in the organizational process and the process of preparation, but they know who they are, and they sure are making history! All couples will come out with a 30 second solo presentation, after which, they will have a complete 6-Couple, 4 Dance Final. Since the purpose is to showcase the style and the dancers, this event will not be judged.
FYI, Professional American Smooth Exhibition is scheduled for Thursday, May 28th. So, if you are in Blackpool, you are in for a treat!

It was also great to find out that dancers are receiving financial support from the NDCA, franchised Fred Astaire and Arthur Murray studios, along with some support from American Ballroom Company.
